Is Anxiety Genetic?

Anxiety disorders often run in families, leading many to question whether anxiety is inherited. Although the precise causes of anxiety are not fully known, studies indicate a genetic link. If a close family member has an anxiety disorder, your risk of developing one is approximately two to six times higher. Anxiety, like many mental health conditions, has a genetic element. However, having a genetic predisposition doesn’t mean you will definitely develop an anxiety disorder. Moreover, some individuals with anxiety disorders do not have a family history of anxiety. While genetics are a factor, other influences such as personal experiences, stress, parenting methods, and family dynamics also play significant roles.

At a Glance

Anxiety is influenced by genetics, but these inherited factors also interact with environmental influences as well. If you have a family history of anxiety, then you will have a higher risk of developing it yourself. However, your anxiety may not be the same as other members of your family, and you can reduce your risk by managing stress, living a healthy lifestyle, and getting treatment.

Verywell Mind

In recent years, scientists have gained a deeper understanding of the genetic factors involved in the development of anxiety disorders. A significant portion of this knowledge stems from twin studies examining anxiety in both identical and fraternal twins, whether they were raised together or apart. Studies involving identical twins have offered some proof that genetics play a role in anxiety disorders. Moreover, genomic research has identified certain genes that are frequently present in individuals with anxiety disorders. However, much of the existing literature is based on studies with limited sample sizes.

Verywell Mind has compiled a list of different types of anxiety disorders.

  • Agoraphobia
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Selective mutism
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Specific phobias
